About the manufacturer
R. Lopez de Heredia
R. Lopez de Heredia is one of Rioja's most traditional wineries, representing a classic, elegant winemaking style that has shaped the region since 1877. Located in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, the winery follows a philosophy that prioritizes patience and craftsmanship over modernization.
What makes R. Lopez de Heredia special is its long aging in American oak – a characteristic that gives the Wines their distinctive complexity and finesse. The Gran Reservas mature for years in barrels and in the bottle before leaving the winery. This means you get a wine that arrives at its perfect drinking window.
The Wines of this estate are not trendy, but timeless. They display intense notes of ripe red fruit, delicate spices, and a mineral tension derived from the Tempranillo grapes of Rioja. Every sip reveals layers – precisely what distinguishes great Rioja.
At Wine In Time you will find Wines from R. Lopez de Heredia, which are true classics and authentically reflect the heritage of Spanish wine culture.

The R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva 1995 comes from the renowned R. Lopez de Heredia winery, one of the last bastions of traditional winemaking in Rioja . Since 1877, this family business has cultivated an uncompromising craftsmanship that is evident in every drop. The 1995 Vintage is considered exceptional, bestowing upon this Gran Reserva a rare elegance and longevity.
The blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano grapes was fermented in large, old wooden casks after harvesting and then aged for at least ten years in American oak barrels – a maturation period that is virtually unparalleled today. This patient vinification process creates a wine of remarkable complexity and finesse that continues to evolve over decades.
On the nose, a complex bouquet unfolds, revealing aromas of dried cherries, tobacco leaves, leather, and delicate spices. On the palate, the R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva 1995 displays a silky texture, vibrant acidity, and perfectly integrated tannins. Notes of cocoa, orange zest, and earthy nuances linger through to the long, elegant finish.
