The History of Rum – A Look Back at the Caribbean

rum (1)

Rum is one of the world's most traditional spirits. Its history began in the 17th century in the Caribbean, but its triumphant journey took it far beyond tropical islands – to bars, cellars and collections all over the world.

Originally, rum was distilled from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production, on the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean. The combination of a tropical climate, abundant resources, and maritime connections made the region the center of rum production. Through Atlantic trade, piracy, and the expansion of European colonial powers, rum spread rapidly to Europe, North America, and Africa. It became a daily ration, particularly in the British Navy—a tradition that lasted until 1970.

Over time, regional differences and styles developed:

Rum styles at a glance:

  • White rum : Light, clear, young – ideal for cocktails.

  • Golden Rum : Mildly matured with notes of vanilla and caramel.

  • Dark rum : Complex, deep, often with notes of wood and spices.

  • Spiced Rum : Flavored with spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg.

  • Overproof Rum : Very high alcohol content, usually over 60% ABV, intense in flavor.

Regional differences:

  • Jamaica : Heavy, fruity rum – traditionally produced using the pot still method.

  • Cuba : Light, elegant rum with a smooth finish.

  • Barbados : Well-balanced rum, often referred to as the country of origin of rum.

  • Martinique : Rhum Agricole – made from fresh sugar cane juice, with AOC seal.

  • Venezuela & Guatemala : Soft, sweet rum with long aging.
