Few champagne houses combine prestige, tradition, and innovation as impressively as Veuve Clicquot . What is considered the epitome of luxury today began with a courageous woman: Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin , better known as Madame Clicquot.
A Widow's Vision
Born in Reims in 1777 , she married François Clicquot , the son of a champagne producer. After his sudden death in 1805, she faced a pivotal decision at the age of only 27: give up or take over ? She chose the latter – and made history.
Madame Clicquot became the first woman to head a champagne house , and she transformed it into one of the most famous in the world. Her nickname, " La Grande Dame de la Champagne, " was not an empty title—it reflected her pioneering achievements.
Innovation with foresight
In 1816, she invented the riddling table , which winemakers still use today to remove sediment from champagne. This technique revolutionized the entire industry and continues to produce clear, brilliant champagnes.
As early as 1810, they released the first Vintage champagne in history – a bold step in a time when almost only cuvées were produced.
A coup for the Tsar's court
During the Napoleonic Wars, she managed to secretly deliver champagne to Saint Petersburg – shortly before the peace treaty of 1814. The Russian aristocracy was delighted, and even Tsar Alexander I declared Veuve Clicquot his favorite champagne.
