The story of the Rose
The history of rosé wine stretches far back. Even in antiquity, the Greeks and Romans drank light Wines made from red grapes, as long maceration periods were virtually unknown at the time. These early Wines were more similar to today's rosé than to the robust Red Wines of today. Over the centuries, rosé has steadily evolved, particularly in southern France. Provence is still considered the cradle of modern rosé. From there, this dry, elegant style, with its light color and delicate aromas, conquered the world. How rosé wine is made
Rosé is made exclusively from red grapes, but its production differs significantly from that of Red Wine. After harvesting, the grapes are pressed, and the juice remains in contact with the grape skins for only a short time – usually just a few hours. This so-called maceration period determines the wine's color, freshness, and intensity. The shorter the contact time, the lighter and more delicate the rosé. Afterward, the skins are removed, and the wine is fermented like a White Wine. Another method is the so-called saignée process, in which a portion of the must is drawn off from the Red Wine must. It's important to know that classic rosé is not made by blending red and White Wine.Rosé Champagne – a special exception
Rosé Champagne is a notable exception. Here, blending is permitted and traditional. A small proportion of still Red Wine is added to the white base wine to create color, structure, and additional aromas. Alternatively, rosé Champagne is produced through a short maceration period. Its flavor profile is characterized by notes of strawberries, raspberries, and delicate pastry aromas, and it is considered particularly elegant and high-quality.Interesting facts about rosé
Rosé should ideally be drunk young to preserve its freshness and fruitiness. Its color ranges from pale salmon pink to vibrant pink – depending on the grape variety and production method. Culinary-wise, rosé pairs perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine, salads, fish, and light meats. Like few other Wines, it embodies lightness, enjoyment, and joie de vivre.Rose at Wine In Time
