In the heart of Austria’s Kamptal wine region lies Weingut Schloss Gobelsburg, one of the country’s oldest wineries. It has been making wine since 1171, when Cistercian monks began working the land. Their influence shaped not just the estate, but Austrian wine as a whole.
Few people know that these monks were among the first to classify vineyards in Austria. They kept records of which plots produced the best grapes—centuries before the French developed the idea of “Grand Cru.”
The winery still uses its historic gravity-flow cellar, built to move wine without pumps. This gentle method protects delicate aromas and flavors, especially in Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
In 1996, winemaker Michael Moosbrugger took over and brought new energy to the estate. He introduced a special range called “Traditionsweine”, inspired by old monastic techniques. These wines are aged in large oak barrels and carefully racked by hand each month.
Gobelsburg is also a founding member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter—Austria’s vineyard classification group. Their system includes:
-
Gutswein – regional wines
-
Ortswein – village-level wines
-
Riedenwein – single-vineyard wines
The estate’s top vineyards include Ried Heiligenstein, with its rare Permian sandstone soil, and Ried Lamm, known for rich, age-worthy whites.
Fun fact: During Lent, monks at Gobelsburg drank their own wine as “liquid bread” when food was forbidden.
Schloss Gobelsburg is more than a winery. It’s a place where 850 years of winemaking come alive in every bottle. For wine lovers, it offers both world-class quality and a deep connection to Austrian history.
