A hot summer in Vienna – what could be better than enjoying a cool glass of wine or sparkling champagne with friends in the park, on the balcony or by the Danube canal?
But when temperatures exceed 30°C, it's not just us who suffer, but also the wine. To help you enjoy wine in style even on hot days, here you'll find practical tips, clever life hacks, and some surprising facts about wine and heat.
1. Cool properly – but not too cold
Too much cold can mask aromas. The optimal temperature brings out the best in your wine:
• Champagne & Sekt: 6–8 °C
• White wine: 8–12 °C
• Rosé: 10–12 °C
• Light Red Wine: 12–14 °C
Tip: A mix of ice cubes and water in the wine bucket cools more efficiently than just ice – the water conducts the cold better.
Even smarter: Cooling sleeves from the freezer – simply slip them over the bottle, and you're done!
2. Choose summer Wines
Light, fresh Wines with lively acidity are ideal in summer. Our favorites:
• Sauvignon Blanc
• Grüner Veltliner
• Dry Riesling
• Rosé from Provence
• Light Pinot Noir or Zweigelt
A high quality one Sekt or champagne makes for sparkling summer evenings.
The perfect solution against summer heat? Champagne on ice!
Light, fresh, and specially made to be served with ice cubes. Varieties such as Moët Ice Impérial or Veuve Clicquot Rich On Ice They're perfect for hot days – simply add 2-3 ice cubes to a large wine glass, pour, and enjoy. Optionally, garnish with mint or a piece of citrus – it doesn't get much more elegant than that.
3. Use suitable glasses
Smaller glasses keep the wine cooler for longer, as less surface area is exposed to warm air.
Tulip shapes are particularly suitable for sparkling Wines – they allow the aromas to be expressed better and keep the bubbles fresh for longer.
Tip: Rinse glasses briefly with cold water before pouring , or even chill them in the refrigerator – this provides an extra refreshing boost. Double-walled glasses are also a stylish and practical solution for hot days.
4. Keep bottles cool
Whether it's a picnic, a barbecue, or a get-together on the patio: wine and heat don't mix well. Therefore:
-
Store bottles in cooler bags or ice containers .
-
In an ice bucket: Combine ice cubes with water – this makes it cool more evenly.
-
Always store bottles in the shade – direct sunlight will quickly make them too hot.
Emergency hack: Wrap the bottle in damp kitchen paper or a wet dish towel and place it in the shade. Evaporation will noticeably cool the wine.
