About the manufacturer
Jean Louis Chave
Jean Louis Chave is a legendary institution in the Rhône Valley and represents Hermitage in its purest, most classic form. For generations, the estate has cultivated prime vineyard sites in the Northern Rhône, remaining true to a philosophy that prioritizes tradition and craftsmanship over trends.
Jean Louis Chave's Wines are born from a profound understanding of the terroir and meticulous work in both the vineyard and the cellar. The Hermitage Rouges, in particular, demonstrate what is possible when slate soils, perfect ripeness, and patience are combined: powerful, complex, and elegant rather than heavy. The renowned Cuvée Cathelin is a legend in its own right – a Hermitage Blanc of such refinement and longevity that collectors worldwide seek it out.
What distinguishes this winery is its rejection of simplification. You won't find any modern gimmicks here, but rather honest, precise Wines that derive their greatness from authenticity. The Vintages age beautifully and develop a precious depth of complexity over the years.
At Wine In Time you will find carefully selected products from this winery – perfect if you want to understand what great Hermitage means.

The Jean Louis Chave Hermitage 2001 Magnum is a monumental Red Wine from one of the most prestigious wineries in the Northern Rhône. Jean Louis Chave is considered a legend in the Rhône , and his Hermitage is among the greatest Syrah Wines in the world. The 2001 Vintage impresses with its remarkable structure and complex character, which can mature even more slowly and harmoniously in the magnum bottle.
The winery vinifies using traditional methods: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended maceration, and aging in used barrels. No fining, no filtration – a pure expression of the terroir. The grapes come from different parcels on the Hermitage hill, each contributing its own unique nuance. The result is a wine of exceptional depth and elegance.
On the nose, a complex bouquet of dark berries, violets, black pepper, and a hint of leather and tobacco unfolds. On the palate, the Jean Louis Chave Hermitage 2001 displays its full power: dense tannins, juicy fruit, and fine minerality. The finish is long, spicy, and impressively precise – a wine that will stay with you for a long time.
