Franz Hirtzberger is one of the most renowned wineries in the Wachau, that legendary wine region on the Danube world-famous for its mineral-driven, precise White Wines. For generations, the estate has cultivated terraces with vines, some over 50 years old, in prime locations such as Honivogl, Steinporz, and Singerriedel – names you'll find on many of their bottles.
What distinguishes Hirtzberger is its unmistakable style: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling of extreme elegance and vibrancy, directly reflecting the slate, gneiss, and loess of their origin. The Franz Hirtzberger Hochrain 2006 is an exceptional Smaragd Riesling from the Wachau, one of Austria 's most prestigious wine regions . Franz Hirtzberger is a pioneer of terroir-driven Riesling vinification, and the Hochrain vineyard in Spitz embodies the very best that the Wachau has to offer in terms of mineral tension and elegance. The 2006 Vintage has now reached the maturity that truly allows great Rieslings to shine.
The grapes grew on ancient slate terraces, were harvested by hand, and spontaneously fermented. Vinification took place in traditional large wooden casks, where the wine developed structure and finesse without losing its crystalline purity. No fining, no intervention – just time and patience.
On the nose, the Franz Hirtzberger Hochrain 2006 is cool and precise: green apple peel, wet stone, a hint of chamomile and beeswax. On the palate, mineral power unfolds, supported by lively acidity and a saline texture reminiscent of flint. The finish is long, cool, and vibrant – a wine that never becomes loud, but always leaves you pondering.
