About the manufacturer
Franz Hirtzberger
Franz Hirtzberger is one of the most renowned wineries in the Wachau, that legendary wine region on the Danube world-famous for its mineral-driven, precise White Wines. For generations, the estate has cultivated terraces with vines, some over 50 years old, in prime locations such as Honivogl, Steinporz, and Singerriedel – names you'll find on many of their bottles.
What distinguishes Hirtzberger is its unmistakable style: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling of extreme elegance and vibrancy, directly reflecting the slate, gneiss, and loess of their origin. The Wines are not opulent, but rather taut and dynamic – they show you what great Austrian White Wine can be. The winery works with a strong sense of tradition, respects the nature of its vineyards, and lets the grapes speak for themselves, rather than over-processing them.
With 27 products in our range, you have the opportunity to discover the full spectrum of this classic wine – from powerful to delicate, mineral interpretations. At Wine In Time, you'll find Hirtzberger Wines that will transport you directly to the steep slopes of the Wachau.

The Franz Hirtzberger Setzberg Smaragd 2019 is a tribute to the Wachau region and its steep terraces. Franz Hirtzberger is one of the region's most influential winemakers, and this Riesling from the Setzberg vineyard impressively demonstrates why. Austrian Wines , especially those from the Wachau, stand for uncompromising quality – and Hirtzberger masters the balance between power and elegance like few others.
The Setzberg vineyard grows on steep gneiss and mica soils, which impart the wine's characteristic minerality. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, and fermentation takes place spontaneously in large wooden casks. The Smaragd status guarantees substance and aging potential. No fining, no intervention – just Riesling, terroir, and craftsmanship.
On the nose, green apple, lemon verbena, and a clear, almost sharp flint note. On the palate, precise, with a firm acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. Yellow fruit, herbal spice, a salty minerality – and a finish that just won't end. This Riesling isn't about being easygoing, but about having character.
